What is a trailer suspension unit and how does it work?

For many people who tow various types of trailers, such as boat trailers, RVs, camper trailers, horsebox trailers or light commercial trailers, the suspension is nothing more than a few pieces of mechanical hardware that separate the wheels from the body of the trailer. It’s much more than that, and we’ll provide you with a basic understanding of trailer suspensions and their functions. We also recommend some of the best options on the market, including Peak Suspension and Knott Avonride Suspension.
In short, suspensions are designed to attach the wheels (or brakes in the case of brake suspensions) to the body of the trailer and are designed to absorb the worst physical impacts from unsmooth surfaces when on the road. They must also absorb noise while ensuring safe towing by maintaining the trailer’s maneuverability behind the vehicle.

What type of trailer suspension units are there?

Before purchasing a trailer suspension, you need to consider the purpose and weight of the trailer. At Trailetek we offer both unbraked suspensions and braked suspensions that can handle weights from 250kg to 1800kg. In the UK, brakes are required by law to be fitted to trailers with a loaded weight of over 750kg.

Unbraked suspension units

You can choose from two types of unbraked trailer suspension units: unbraked suspension units without hubs and unbraked suspension units with cast hubs. Two examples of our best-selling high-quality suspension units with and without hubs are the Avonride 350kg suspension with extended short axle and cast hubs and the Peak 750kg. suspension unit with standard short axle.

Braking suspension units

For those towing trailers weighing over 750kg, you will need a brake suspension unit. We stock Avonride and Peak brake suspension units weighing 750kg, 1300kg, 1500kg and 1800kg respectively.

What else do I need when I buy a suspension unit?

When purchasing a suspension unit, don’t forget to purchase a suspension mounting plate to attach it to your trailer. We offer 6-hole suspension mounting plates and 8-hole suspension mounting discs. Be sure to check your unit before purchasing to ensure you are purchasing the correct unit. We also offer a range of suspension kits with all the parts you need to make it as easy as possible, including hubs, bearings and caps.

If I buy a trailer suspension unit, do I need an axle?

No, you don’t need an axle if you buy a suspension, because the suspension is the device you mount on the trailer chassis and attach the wheels to the trailer. We also carry a variety of brake and non-brake torsion axles. These can be purchased as a replacement for the suspension. Torsion axles are made of thick rubber hidden inside the axle tube. As each wheel moves up and down while towing the trailer, the rubber inside the axle compresses to provide even wheel suspension for a smooth ride. The torsion axle allows each wheel to work independently to absorb any shock from the road. Since there are fewer moving parts on the torsion axle, one of its main advantages is that it requires less maintenance. All you need to do is give us the dimensions of your axle and we will make it to those specifications.
Another type of axle that we sell at Trailetek is the short axle. These are for off-road use only, as suspension is required by law. We offer these as individual units or they can be purchased as a kit with hubs and bearings.

Why should I buy a new trailer suspension unit or torsion axle?

The answer is simple! Why buy a new trailer when you can upgrade your trailer suspension or torsion axle? By upgrading your trailer suspension or tow axle, you will not only extend the life of your trailer, you will also improve its performance. Our suspensions and torsion axles will help you improve your trailer’s ability to withstand uneven terrain or handle rough roads.
When looking at trailer suspensions and axles, there are many things to consider. The most important thing is to know exactly what you are using the trailer for and the weight you will be hauling. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible when deciding what you need, but if you have any questions, please contact one of our friendly team who will help you through the process.
